I read Spanki’s blog post several months ago, I was waiting for the perfect time to share. But I felt the longer I wanted the more people were putting off getting their portraits done. There is no better time than the present!

Spanki Mills is a professional photographer from Texas. She has 4 beautiful children, including a set of twin boys! Check out her website Spanki Mills Photography and her blog Spanki Mills Blog

“The other day my husband and I started talking and the conversation lead to what I call my “picture wall”  and the one image of all 4 of our children on walking and holding hands. He said to me, and remember this is coming form the mouth a one VERY CHEAP man who was not raised where pictures were important, “that picture is priceless to me, had you come home the day it was taken and told me you wanted to spend $500 on that print I would have had a hard time, but now, it is one of my most treasured images of my children. It is a time of their lives that as parents we were so busy parenting to to really grasp that age. It is a time we will never get back, I can stare at this picture for hours and take in the details of how Paysli’s shoes are on the wrong feet, how the boys hands were still “baby hands” how they had missing teeth, everything about it I love”… So that one conversation got me thinking.

The  phone rang at 1am. I knew what the call was about, I already knew what I was about to be told, but it hearing it made it real. It was the phone call from a sibling, telling me my cancer stricken father had taken his last breath. I gently got out of bed, not to wake anyone, went to my office and dug out of the drawer the last picture we had taken together and just held it and sobbed. That was all I had left, the pictures we had taken. Still to this day, five years later, when we tell stories of my father to my children, we get out the pictures and re-live that moment in our lives that was taken away all to soon.

I was once (a looong time ago) 100lbs and got pregnant with TWINS! I have only one snapshot that I set my camera on the timer and took of myself. At the time I felt fat, and ugly. We look back and I am so disappointed with myself for not making it a priority to have maternity pictures taken, when would my body EVER look like that again. At the time I was more shamed but now, older, I am proud to show off what my tiny little frame  held. I grew two VERY healthy  full weight (5.1lb and 5.12lb) babies in my stomach! ROCK STAR! And still to this day think I should tattoo their names on each of the stretch marks I have on my stomach!;)

Years later I was in a doctors office being told one of my boys had a bone disease, and the only way to “cure” it was to amputate his leg. The first thing I did when we got home, set an appt. for a second opinion, and the second call was to a photographer so we could have family pictures of all of us with shorts on and barefoot so one day we could show our son what his real leg looked like. He is in medical history books for being the ONLY recordable child to NOT lose his leg with this disease, which I 100% credit GOD our father for… but, pictures were important!

Like my husband said, the cost would have been hard to swallow for the prints, but  years later, the images are priceless! We as Americans have gotten so used to spending money on ridiculous things! I know someone who spent $1,500.00 on a purse, but thinks money on pictures is silly. That is their own opinion, but I highly doubt that the purse will give her the same feeling an image of her precious children will years from now. Are your grand-babies going to gather in a room and ooh and ahh over a purse, or clothing, or red soled shoes, or are they going to laugh and reminisce over the images you had hanging on the wall of their mother in braces. Or the prom she went to with their father for the first time….

I am not saying this to get anyone to hire me. I just want to make you aware of how important images are and how one day they all become a treasure! So make sure when you hire a professional, they can give you what you want, something to cherish for years to come. If you do hire a professional, make sure to save up it is an investment, get the images you want and hang them proudly on your walls. If you chose to take the images yourself, take the time to learn your camera, and make sure to get it out and USE it!  We all too often are filled with regret. Take it from me, we will never get these moments in time back.”

Thanks so much Spanki for sharing your story!

It was a fantastic evening…….

I was so excited to meet this family…..

When they scheduled their session they had mentioned they had never had family portraits before, as they found out why almost a year ago with a new addition to their family.

They said their family wasn’t complete and now was…. so without delay ~ THE family portraits!

I had the privilege of capturing the Irwin family again this year. When I photograph clients every year, I am always amazed at how much the kids have grown! The kids were excited to see me and I was very excited to see everyone and visit the family farm!

I just have to say this again……I totally have the best job…..people let me in to witness a glimpse of what their life is….. I am able to stop time for a moment and capture the memories for them to be cherished on their walls for ever and ever. My cheeks seriously hurt at the end of the day, I constantly catch myself with the biggest smile on my face, a tear in my eye or even a right out giggle. Telling your life story, filling your walls with your art! Beautiful moments right from your own family…. Priceless……… thank you……

At the end of my sessions it is always fun to play in the sunset if their is time, we had a few minutes….just a few…. :)

Over the year, the older 2 kids started raising chickens and selling their eggs. From the moment the session was booked I was asked if I would take pics of them with their chickens……. Absolutely! Right in the coop!

Some of the best moments during a session are the moments that are just “caught”. When I am photographing someone or something else and turn around to see this….. moments like this melt my heart…….

Here are 2 more moments captured. I love that I caught her doing her hair (yes she caught me taking her pic) Doing her hair with a mirror out on the farm….. perfect…….

Thanks Irwin Fam for another fantastic session!!!

Til next time,

Cheers,

We had a ton of fun out on the farm with the Ross family! It is great to capture families in the own enviornment! I love scouting out locations around the properties, there are usually a ton of stories to be told and some history to capture while were exploring!

I really love when families choose to have their portraits done at their homes or farms because the images just tell that much more of who they are.

A ton of memories were captured during this session: mom & dad lovin’ Kaysee, boys being boys and sharing good time with friends.

Here are just a few of my fav’s:

The weather is finally warming up, portrait sessions are booking quickly and wedding season is in full swing! And I am LoVin’ every second of it!

A few quick reminders! Father’s Day albums are so incredible! The sessions have been a blast to shoot and listening to the kid’s answers has been hilarious! We will continue booking Father’s Day Album sessions until June 4th. Click the link to see details “Father Day Album details”

If you are looking for a Saturday session they are booking very quickly!! We have set a few dates aside for Rondeau sessions (see below for details), otherwise we are booking into August for Saturday sessions.  Friday nights are booking about 3 weeks in advance, and Weeknights/days are booking about 1-2 weeks in advance.

So if you have been thinking about scheduling your portrait session, you may want to book your day & time soon.

Fall portraits will start booking quickly, we recommend calling to book your fall session time in June/July.

We are soo excited for our June/July limited edition sessions!

The Summer Special is an outdoor session with a “front porch feel” that reflects on the beauty of summer and the fleeting season on childhood. From a tea party to a bike ride we have it covered! Some of our props include a wagon, antique bicycle, antique doll stroller, pedal car, and a teddy bear.

The wardrobe is simple linen dresses for girls and button down shirts and caps for little boys. Or feel free to bring your own!

As we mentioned above Saturday’s are booking very quickly, we are currently booking into August for Saturday sessions.

Last year Rondeau was a favourite location for many families for their portrait sessions. We love it out there!  We have currently set aside 2 Saturday’s for Rondeau portraits. Each session will be approximately 1-2 hours, these sessions are a family adventure, tons of fun and will be a day remembered! Sessions are limited so book early!

I have had the oppurtunity to capture this momma’s last 3 pregnancies. This is baby #5, the tie breaker….. and is due to arrive anytime.

This family is full of energy and excitement, 5 kids under the age of 7, keeps the days full of laughter and adventure. We went to the park to play and get some silhouette of the family. It has been awhile since I captured some silhouettes, they always turn out incredible and end up as large portraits on the wall!

I have been once again invited into the delivery room to capture the arrival of their last child and I am truly honoured and can’t wait!!!

The last few weeks have been so very exciting! So many plans put into action. The to do list is actually shrinking. The studio is finally starting to become “a studio”. It is quite a large space and it is going to take some time to be fully furnished. As just any old thing won’t do….but as I find each magically piece, those items that scream at me. I will add them in.
The images on the wall bring a smile to my face each time I open the door and turn on the lights.

There’s only 2 weeks left to get your Ballet Babes and Hockey Star portraits done. As the studio will be transformed again in March.

I had the pleasure to hang out with some of the “B” family the other day, and had a blast playing with a few different props! Here is a sneak peek at how one prop can be used for a few different looks ~ boy or girl! :)

I was so excited to go shoot Ashley and Ron’s E session. We met at Rock Glen and had a fabulous time exploring. It started to mist (not really rain, lol) we kept on shooting. Unfortunately we had to cut out early because it started to pour! I am looking forward to their wedding! Thanks guys!

I met up with the Farrell family out at Rondeau, we totally lucked out and hit one of these crazy out of the ordinary warm days, kind of like today! :)
The two parents are very lucky to have 3 adorable girls, I loved watching how the girls already interact with each other, comforting and reassuring. Having 3 girls of my own, I can totally relate how much love these 3 will have for each other. They can mess with each other but don’t anyone else dare! lol

Thanks for the giggles, girls!!
